Hanoi – The City of the Rising Dragon

Nocturnal rest and the hustle and bustle of the day alternate. Lakes and canals, green parks and tree-lined boulevards invite you to stroll, shops and food stalls for shopping and feasting. The old town could undoubtedly be called the heart of the city. There are not only traditional small specialty shops and centuries-old handicraft businesses, but also modern boutiques and hotels.

Hoan Kiem Lake is considered the soul of the city for the residents of Hanoi. The name means “The lake of the returned sword”. The origin of this name lies in the legend of Le Noi, a Vietnamese hero who wanted to fight against the overpowering Chinese. Before the battle, a golden turtle rose from the lake and presented him with a sword that he could use to win the battle. After the glorious act, the turtle reappeared and took the magic sword from him.

Another quarter of Hanoi that you should definitely visit is the French Quarter. In addition to the countless restaurants, hotels, cafes and department stores, there is a lot to discover here. Here is also the architectural gem, the Hanoi Opera House, which is based on the style of the famous Garnier Opera in Paris.

The best way to get an overview of the area around the famous medieval citadel Thang Long is from the Cot Co flag tower. The central area of ​​the heavily destroyed citadel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. South of the citadel is the Van Mieum Temple of Literature, which was Hanoi’s first university and is now one of the most famous and important temples in Vietnam.

History is everywhere in Hanoi

Ba Dinh Square is the parade square of the city. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam’s independence on this square. In Hanoi there are many sights around the father of the Ho Chi Minh Declaration of Independence. On the one hand there is the Ho Chi Minh residential building, which is located in the park of the governor’s palace. On the other hand, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a particularly important place in the city, where Uncle Ho is laid out in the glass coffin.

There is also a Ho Chi Minh Museum, in which documents and works relating to Ho’s life are exhibited. Chua Mot Cot stake pagoda is one of the city’s oldest architectural monuments.

It is located in the middle of a lotus pond and has been destroyed and reconstructed several times. Another worth seeing district of Hanoi is the Cathedral District. This is right on the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake and is centered in St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
